Here, you'll find valuable tips and tools to actively participate in your student's learning process, especially within the special education framework. Let's navigate the world of IEPs, family resources, and at-home support together.

Where I started....

My journey in special education began as an advocate for my own daughter.   I came into the process completely unaware of her rights, where to turn for assistance, or who was responsible for providing services.  (My daughter attended private school, and this created some additional steps and opportunities to educate my self in the process.)

My current state...

Since the pandemic shut down, I have been working as a paraprofessional in special education.  It was going to work every day, seeing the needs of my students, and the steps the teachers took to provide the best opportunities and supports for our learners that pushed me to want to do the same.  I remember spending time with my aunt growing up, in her kindergarten classroom, and watching her differentiate education and support, quietly meeting the needs above and beyond what the laws "required" to do her best to set her students up for growth and success beyond her classroom.  I wanted to be like the teachers I worked with, and pour my heart into these kids just like my aunt did.

The end game....

Given the amazing examples I have been blessed with in my life, I knew I wanted to make a difference as well... so I decided to take myself back to school and become the people I have looked up to the most.  I pledge that my classroom will focus on student based learning, providing every resource I am able to help students grow, comprehend and master their academic skills.  Additionally, my goal is to nurture the students along the way, watch the excitement in their eyes as they gain understanding, and the pride on their faces as they become more independent in social and life skills as well.  I will be open to conversations with parents about goals they would like to see growth in as well.   In the end, if I turn out to be half the person and educator my aunt was... I will be able to hold my head high with pride each and every day.
